5 Things To Do When Your
Furnace Stops Working
These five steps take under five minutes. One of them may restore your heat before we arrive — and all of them help us diagnose faster when we do.
Confirm it is set to Heat (not Cool or Fan Only), and the set temperature is at least 2°C above the current room temperature. Try fresh batteries if the display is dim. Bump the target temperature up 5° and wait 30 seconds. If the furnace doesn't click on — continue.
A clogged filter is the single most preventable no-heat call in London Ontario. Locate your filter — usually inside the furnace cabinet door or the large cold-air return duct. If it is grey and matted solid, replace it with a matching size. The furnace may have shut itself down to prevent overheating. A new filter may restart it.
Go to your electrical panel and find the breaker labelled Furnace or HVAC. If it is in the middle (tripped) position, flip it fully OFF then back ON once. If it trips again immediately, do not reset it again — this signals an electrical fault that requires Hawana.
